Mother's Day Succulent Terrarium

5/1/2019

Good Morning!  Did you catch my segment this morning on KUTV 2 News showing you an idea for a mother's day gift!  Succulent terrariums are a fun and easy gift you and the kids can make!  This would also work great as a teacher gift.

Here's how to put your own together:
Supplies needed:
Glass Jar
River Rocks
Potting Soil
Succulents
Decorative Items (optional)

Glass jars
You can use anything from a mason jar or small candle holder to a large glass vase or apothecary jar.  I found mine at Hobby Lobby, TJ Max, Home Goods, Tai Pan, Dollar Tree, or even thrift stores.  You may even have some at your home that will work great!  When you have selected your glass jar, I suggest that you take it with you to get your plants.  That way you can be sure they will fit, and that you like how they look inside your glass.

Rocks
You can get river rock from the nursery, Home Depot, or even the dollar store.  You can also just have your kids gather some rocks from outside.

Potting Soil
Miracle Grow makes a potting soil that is specially formulated for Cacti and Succulents.  You can use that, but it is a little more expensive.  I chose to use Miracle Grow's Moisture Control Potting Mix. You can use this and you will just need to water less often.

Succulents
Succulents come in lots of varieties.  If you are adding more than one succulent to your terrarium choose ones that are different heights, colors, and textures.  Remember groupings are best in odd numbers.  Home Depot and Lowes have a selection of succulents, and they can also be found at your local nursery.
Before we get started I want to let you know that not only do I love to share tutorials, I am also a Handmade Shop owner.  You can shop all of my items right here on my site.  Visit my SHOP to browse items!

Start out by having your kids put in a layer of rocks.  This is for drainage for your plants.  If the jar you are using is large enough to allow it try to add 1-2 inches of rocks.  Lots of sites will tell you the next step is Activated Charcoal or Carbon.  You can certainly add this if you want to, but it is only absolutely necessary in closed containers.

Next you will add your soil.

Most of the glass containers I chose were somewhat hard to get your hands down in for planting. I chose to put a thin layer of soil, put in my plants, and add soil around them.  Be sure to loosen the roots on your plants.

You may want to use a plastic spoon to get soil in tight or hard to reach spaces.

Try as much as possible not to get soil on your plants.  You can use a paint brush to delicately brush off any soil that gets on them.

Finish it off by adding any number of decorative elements you want.  Small trucks, or tractors, dinosaurs, butterflies, fairies, princesses.  Whatever you think will be fun for the kids.  You can use items you already have.  I picked up all of mine at the dollar store.

In the Printables section of my store HERE,  you can download these gift tags for FREE to add to your terrarium!  On the back side it also list care instructions, so your mother will know what she needs to do.  They are designed so that the kids can grab some crayons and color them.  Add them to your terrarium with a clothes pin, put them on a popsicle stick and place them down inside, or tie them on with some twine.

Growing up, my grandmother used to have tons of plants in her house. We always visited her because she lives alone. During the times we spent there, I remember my sister and I would always hang out in her garden. It was the most beautiful garden I have ever seen. She filled them with lilies and blue roses because my grandfather used to give my grandmother those exact flowers when he was still alive. In some way, I feel my grandfather's presence whenever I am in that garden.

A little about alese

I live in Benjamin, UT with my husband and 10 year old son.  He wants to be a bull rider when he grows up, and we love helping him chase that dream just like I'm chasing mine.

In about 2010 after making a few custom handmade gifts for friends and family members, my husband told me, "You could make a business out of this."  I started out mostly blogging about the things that I made for others.  My business has since evolved to what it is today.  All of my items are handmade in Utah by me!  Building and creating is my passion. Thank you for being a part of it!
